A Progressive Candidate running for California's Congressional District 38; House of RepresentativesC
MORE Focus on Housing:
I believe housing is a basic human right. In our district and nationally, people struggle to make ends meet and are threatened with homelessness. COVID-19 has not only made it more difficult to make ends meet, but the lack of response from our federal government during the onset and peak of the pandemic was appalling. During this time California provided motels in our district to temporarily house those who suffer homelessness. However, when the funding ran out there was no plan to house our homeless neighbors. Even for residents who are not homeless, many already lived paycheck to paycheck prior to the pandemic. Rents are largely unaffordable, mortgage prices have sky-rocketed, and high property taxes are hurting homeowners.
I do not accept money from “too big to fail” banks that keep the cost of housing out-of-reach for so many. I will fight for lower cost housing, stronger protections for renters, and lower property taxes. I will fight for programs that end and prevent homelessness. I will fight to provide desperately needed rehabilitation and support so that no one has to go without a home.
MORE Job Growth:
California has become too expensive for many businesses to open or operate. Because of this, we struggle to find high paying jobs for even the most qualified individuals. Many in our district must make long commutes just to find work. I support tax incentives and rebates for small and medium sized businesses that bring high paying jobs back to our district.
MORE Medicare for All:
I know first-hand the outrageous cost of insurance: the struggle of monthly payments that do not even apply toward your deductible. I know the hardship of debating if you should go to the doctor because the out-of-pocket cost is more than you can afford. I believe healthcare to be a basic human right and necessity. I believe in a single-payer system that provides medical for all. I believe in free substance abuse rehabilitation and free mental health treatments. I believe no one should be afraid that a medical emergency will bankrupt them. I believe that you should see a doctor when you need to, not when you can afford to.
Too many of our leaders refuse to act, and people are suffering for it. I support Universal Health Care; I am a strong believer that people should always come over profit. I do not accept money from insurance companies or Big Pharma. Politicians who accept this money are quite literally playing games with your life. It is way past time that our government does more for us and less for their own pockets.
MORE Rights to Higher Learning:
I believe in the idea of an equal right to Higher Education. I support the forgiveness of existing student loan debt, free community college, and free vocational training. The inability to afford college has highlighted the inequality in under-privileged areas. No one should be denied the opportunity to continue their education or find a good paying job simply because they cannot afford to attend.
MORE than just a Green New Deal:
We have already caused irreparable damage to our planet and have threatened the quality of life for future generations. Many of us will see the end of fossil fuels in our lifetime. The question is; WILL it be on our terms? Introducing the Green New Deal is a great first step, but congressional leaders lack the courage to act. I have the courage to say this is not an easy transition, but it is a necessary one.
MORE Justice Reform:
Justice is a word that has long since held a double standard in this country. A person’s right to “justice” has often been based on the color of their skin, their immigration status, their gender identity, or the amount of money they have in the bank.
I am not afraid to say I stand with movements like Black Lives Matter, Fair Immigration Reform, the Human Rights Campaign, and the Democratic Socialists of America. I fully support reforming our justice system, eliminating Qualified Immunity, and ending the inhumane treatment of immigrants.
I strongly support ending the discriminatory practice of cash bail. I support reform and intervention programs that help end the school-to-prison cycle. I will put pressure on our state to provide more funding toward fighting addiction. I will push for improving public safety and reducing neighborhood crime.
