More about Elizabeth Moreira

Elizabeth Moreira

A Progressive Candidate running for California's Congressional District 38
House of Representatives

As a rooted member of the community, Elizabeth Moreira brings a personal stake into her campaign. A strong, progressive Democratic Socialist, born in Whittier, CA, and living in District 38 with her family, she is relatable and approachable.

Elizabeth was raised in a working-class family; as an adult she has experienced first-hand the hardship of living paycheck to paycheck. She understands the lack of opportunities for underprivileged communities and that homeownership in our district is rarely attainable. She knows the struggle of paying student loan debt when you can barely pay the rent, and the ridiculous cost of medical insurance for bare minimum coverage.

Education and Career

As a high school student, Elizabeth witnessed the horrors of September 11th, 2001, and it led her to serve Our Country upon graduation. In the United States Army, Signal Intelligence Division, she proudly protected our Nation’s security. After her service, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Design and Marketing at The Art Institute of Southern California and a Master’s in Business Degree. Elizabeth has worked her way up through frontline employee to management in the hospitality industry.

Family

Elizabeth believes in the strength of family. She has found her most important role has been as a mother and wife. She is deeply committed to both.
Married to a Portuguese immigrant, she knows the challenges within our immigration system. Her husband, Renato, was born and raised in Delaes, a small village just outside of Porto. Renato is the first of his immediate family to leave Portugal and the first to live in the United States. He is resident of the district’s Portuguese Community and a contributing member to the Portuguese Hall in Artesia.
As a mother, she knows the issues facing today’s families. With two children in the Norwalk-La Mirada School District, Elizabeth has served as PTA President and a member of the School Site Council. She advocates for balance in our children’s lives, and encourages her daughters to embrace their education as well as the arts and volunteerism.
A strong believer in tomorrow’s leaders, Elizabeth has co-authored two children’s books with her mother, a school teacher in Los Angeles County. Max and The Mouse books, illustrated by her sister-in-law, focus mainly on promoting online cybersafety and advancing interests in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

More for the District

As a member of the community, Elizabeth has seen the beautification efforts on our local streets and has chosen to support these efforts of enhancing neighborhoods and addressing the needs of struggling small businesses and increased homelessness.

Experiencing first hand, she understands the struggle to stay above water just to meet basic needs such as housing and utility payments. She understands the costs to homeownership seem out of reach for so many due to sky-rocketing prices and property taxes. She understands that rent is largely unaffordable, not properly regulated, and has very little protection for renters. She understands that making enough money to be off of welfare means no longer being able to afford medical insurance and basic needs for your family. She understands that high-paying jobs have left the district and are more frequently leaving the state due to high state taxes and the lack of incentives for local business development. She understands that our school districts here are subjected to segregation and racist practices through unfair funding distributions and deny our largely multiracial and immigrant district equal educational value and support for our children. She understands that the lack of child intervention programs, public safety, and community involvement programs for our children leads to a growing increase in specifically violent crimes and school-to-prison patterns.
