Celebration of Pride

MORE Action

About The Event

The La Mirada City Council has ignored calls to raise the Pride Flag at City Hall throughout the month of June. Despite multiple emails and public comments they have not even added the toping to their agenda.
On June 22nd we gathered as allies to proudly support our LGBTQ+ community and show the elected City Council of La Mirada that they cannot ignore their LGBTQ+ residents.
Many gathered with us in this celebration as we colored city hall with rainbows during their last City Council meeting in June.Â?

Behind the Event

Why we need to do MORE

Every year cities across our nation raise their Pride Flags on May 22nd in honor of Harvey Milk Day. Traditionally these flags are flown throughout June in recognition of Pride Month. La Mirada has not joined the majority of our surrounding cities in raising their Pride Flag despite calls to do so. Because of this we chose to take action.

Raising the Pride Flag throughout June is not a message of gender or sex. It is a symbol of solidarity with a community that has been the target of harassment and violence for generations.

When a city chooses to raise their Pride Flag they are sending a message that hate, bullying, and violence towards our LGBTQ+ community is not welcome here. They show strength and unity with their people regardless of how they identify.

Harvey Milk, born May 22nd 1930, was the first openly gay elected official in San Francisco. He fought to pass a bill banning discrimination in housing and employment based on sexual orientation. Because of this, Harvey Milk was met with violence and hate when he was assassinated alongside Mayor George Moscone on November 27th, 1978 by a disgruntled City Manager.
